This paper investigates the geometrical parameters effects of a Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor (PMA-SRM) on its electromagnetic performance and its sensorless control capability in low speed operation. The performance is meanly characterized by electromagnetic torque and power factor. The sensorless control capability is assessed by the incremental saliency level at rated current and above. The geometrical parameters analyzed are the airgap as well as the number, thickness and inclination of the flux-barriers in the rotor. The variation of some of these parameters improved incremental saliency without degrading electromagnetic performance.
