Granular systems can consist of grains with vastly different mechanical properties. In ourexperimental study, we examine the compaction of 2D bidisperse systems made of soft andrigid particles. We analyze the evolution of their main macroscopic observables throughoutthe compaction process. This analysis spans from the quasi-loose state, through the jammingtransition, to very high densities, considering both the local scale at each particle and the entiremacroscopic system. We demonstrate the primary characteristics of such systems when eachphase dominates, as well as identifying the main characteristic during the phase transition. Thisstudy marks the initial step towards a deeper understanding of the mechanical behavior ofpolydisperse granular materials in terms of grain rheology.
