Sharka is the main disease of Prunus and is caused by thePlum pox virus (PPV). Since the first description of thedisease on plum in Bulgaria at the beginning of the 20thcentury, PPV has spread to most of the European continent(and in countries throughout the world). Dependingon the country or region, the prevalence of the disease mayvary greatly due to different agro-ecological conditions,PPV diversity and disease control strategies. This talkpresented the current knowledge about sharka disease situationin Europe regarding PPV diversity, disease ecologyand epidemiology, as well as the main research actionsundertaken within the framework of the work-packageWPE2 of the SharCo European research program. Themain objectives of this work-package are (1) a betterunderstanding of the epidemiology of the three main PPVstrains (PPV-D, PPV-M, PPV-Rec) through experimentalapproaches and surveys in orchards and (2) the developmentof realistic simulation models of disease spread thatwill allow testing various strategies of disease surveillanceand control.Current options
