Résumé
Polyhedral-shaped particles form a broad class of granular materials. We use particle dynamics simulations to analyze the evolution of dense packings of polyhedral particles subjected to fully periodic triaxial boundary conditions in terms of both particle-level and microstructural variables. We probe both large-strain plastic behavior and small-strain elastic response under orthotropic boundary conditions. We show that key macroscopic properties such as shear strength and elastic moduli are controlled by particle connectivity and contact orientation anisotropy, and the particle shape and friction coefficient between particles affect the macroscopic behavior mainly through these microstructural parameters.
