Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a broad class of molecules present in our environment that are suspected to cause adverse effects in the endocrine system by interfering with the synthesis, transport, degradation or action of endogenous hormones. Here, we use representative examples to review the different mechanisms through which EDCs alter hormonal functions. A particular focus is made on the interaction of endocrine disruptors with nuclear and aryl hydrocarbon receptors that appear to mediate most of their deleterious effects observed at environmental concentrations.
