Palaeo-Eskimos arrived in Greenland approximately 4,500 years ago when some groups managed to settle on the north-eastern coast and remain for decades or sometimes several centuries. Thule populations arrived in the region ca. AD 1400 cal. and survived for 450 years, adapting to the harsh conditions of the Little Ice Age (LIA) before abandoning north-east Greenland in circumstances that are unclear around 1850. In 1925, an Inuit community was relocated by the Danish government in the Scoresby Sund fjord for hunting purposes, establishing the village of Ittoqqortoomiit. At Ukaleqarteq (Kap Höegh), 60 km north of Ittoqqortoormiit near the coast, modern hunting cabins and archaeological sites are located at the same strategic locations, close to a little auk (Alle alle) breeding site. In 2017, a summer camp consisting of about 64 structures was rapidly surveyed. Benefiting from the exceptional weather conditions of August 2018 and little snow cover, a second survey using a drone revealed the extent of the summer camp and the presence of semi-subterranean structures, shelters and caches down the slope. A Digital Terrain Model (DTM) was used to identify these new archaeological features. High-resolution photogrammetric data and high-quality DTMs assisted in the discovery and recording of a site endangered by rising sea level as a result of global climate change. In this paper the authors raise the question of the contemporaneity of the archaeological site and the seabird colony during the LIA. Radiocarbon dates show that soils in the seabird colony date from the beginning of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the peat deposit at the foot of the settlement, dependent on nutrient supply, appears to have continued to grow during the LIA.
