t has been 18 months since the first case of SARS-CoV-2 infection inPoland was registered in March 2020. During this time, the number of officialinfections has varied every day between “0” (March, 2020) to tens of thousands(autumn, 2020, spring, 2021), summing up to 2 895 947 infections and 75 464deaths (16.09.2021). The spatial distribution of cases showed variability over time,but the common feature is the clustered character of local infections. The size ofthe cluster (focus of infection) may vary in number, but each time it is locallyconcentrated – in a community linked by family and social bonds characterisingthe local patient “0”, i.e. the first person infected in the cluster. The spatial spreadof the cluster is defined by the contact catchment area of patient “0”. Individualsaged 60+ are particularly susceptible to health consequences from viral infections.They are predisposed by their overall health condition, while the risk of infectionis defined by the local stage of the epidemic and exposure to viral vectors, i.e.infected persons in their contact catchment area.
