Résumé
The complete reduction of the carbonyl group of an aldehyde or ketone to a methylene/methyl group is generally achieved using the well-known Wolff–Kishner and Clemmensen reductions and these two transformations form the majority of the chapter. A range of useful procedures along with possible side reactions is presented; examples will be mainly taken from the recent literature when possible. The use of ionic hydrogenation, metal catalyzed hydrogenolysis and electrochemistry, using predominantly aromatic ketones and aldehydes, is also presented. Other methods are briefly discussed.
