The Pyrenean–Cantabrian chain is an east–west oriented mountain range that stretches for 1,000 km from Provence to Asturias. On the basis of the hypsometry of surfaces in the three main drainage areas of the Pyrenees (Ebro Basin, Mediterranean flank and Atlantic flank) and surface interpolation, Bosch et al. argued for the existence of a single, now dissected, planation surface across the Pyrenees. The Pyrenean range experienced a particularly complex post-compressive period, of which the current reliefs are testimonies. Before images of the deep structure of the Pyrenean chain were obtained, the geometry of the orogen was widely debated. Although geological constraints had already demonstrated the fan-like structure of the chain, nothing could definitively establish the deep organization of the major Pyrenean structures. Nevertheless, some Pyrenean plateaus show evidence of moderate glacial erosion, which indicates that the relict surfaces may have been locally reworked by temperate-based glaciers
