Today, the vast majority of the world's energy needs are met by fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas. Green hydrogen is a promising option that is widely regarded as an alternative energy source that could play a vital role in the energy transition. Storing hydrogen in the form of ammonia is a less restrictive, more efficient and more environmentally friendly alternative. Ammonia is a particularly interesting molecule for mobile energy applications, either as a chemical carrier for hydrogen storage or directly as a fuel. For a transition to a carbon‐neutral energy system, ammonia production must be decarbonized. Natural gas is the essential source of dihydrogen for ammonia synthesis. The development of ruthenium‐based catalysts for ammonia synthesis has a long history. Electride materials have specific properties linked to the existence of zones of high electron density within them.
