Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is based on a single dose of ionizing radiation delivered during surgery, affording a very precise application of a high dose to a precise target volume, with a minimal exposure to healthy tissues which are usually moved or protected during the procedure. IORT delivered with electrons was developed in the late 1970s and was initially dedicated to deep-seated or radioresistant tumors (such as with pancreatic cancer, retroperitoneal sarcomas) or locoregional pelvic relapses in previously irradiated volumes.
