Abstract
The chapter starts with a general presentation of typical soft matter systems. Their main physical characteristics are put in context to the underlying microstructure and dynamics. The basic notions for scattering techniques, are then presented, including a simplified experimental description, the definition of experimental variables, such as momentum transfer, differential scattering cross section, and their relationship to structure and dynamics of soft matter. Some important experimental aspects, such as measurements in absolute units, are highlighted, as well as general points to be considered when solving structural problems with scattering techniques. Finally, the concept of the book is summarized and short descriptions the individual book chapters are presented.
