The scientific literature on elite sports practiceis quite abundant, but there are relativelyfew papers that specifically address the issueof using qualitative methodologies with eliteathletes. One exception is the article by Tanet al. (2014), which is an important piece ofwork that questions the ethical issues ofqualitative methodologies with elite gymnasts.In this article, the authors placeparticular emphasis on the importance offully informing participants of the purposeand nature of the study and ensuring thattheir participation does not cause them anyharm. The authors also stress the importanceof involving the sport’s governing bodies inagreeing research protocols and the way inwhich results are disseminated. Other articlesfocus more specifically on the investigator’sposture in the field: Kerr and Sturm (2019)nuance the insider/outsider binarity of theethnographic posture, and McNarry et al.(2019) and Townsend and Cushion (2021)question the challenges of engaging andmaintaining a reflexive posture for theethnographic field investigator in elite sport.
