Mechanochemistry is the broad area of chemistry concerned with the chemical transformations activated and driven by the application of mechanical forces to chemical systems containing at least one solid phase, mostly in granular form. The rate of mechanochemical transformations depends on a unique combination of statistical, mechanical and chemical factors that account for, respectively, the method utilized to process the chemical system, its plastic deformation behavior, and the chemical interactions within it. In this chapter, we briefly review the fundamentals of mechanochemical kinetics relating the discrete nature of the mechanical processing of powders to the shape of the kinetic curves that can be obtained experimentally.
