With their two-dimensional (2D) planar structure, MXenes exhibit excellent performance in sensing applications, possessing unique characteristics, such as a tunable bandgap, an accessible surface, and outstanding mechanical properties. This type of materials, which includes carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides, and transition metals, can create complex and beneficial 2D layered morphologies and can serve as sensors in pollution applications, safety operations, robotics, and prosthetics. The ease of functionalizing MXenes and their ability to fabricate composites in conjunction with other nanomaterials to provide novel, practical, and efficient sensors via selective etching will revolutionize advanced sensor research.
