Abstract
Introduction au Serious Game by Julian Alvarez and Damien Djaouti aims to understand and analyze the phenomenon of Serious Games. These are defined as video games whose purpose goes beyond simple entertainment, integrating pedagogical, professional or communication objectives. The book aims to explore the theoretical and applied dimensions of these games, while examining their impact and evolution. In the first part, the authors retrace the history and evolution of Serious Games, placing them in a broader context of digital innovation and the transformation of educational and professional practices. They identify several areas of application, including education, vocational training, healthcare, defense, communication and politics. Through these different approaches, they highlight the diversity of uses and objectives pursued by the designers and users of these games. The book then looks at the typology of Serious Games, categorizing them according to their structural characteristics and purposes. The authors examine how Serious Games could potentially differ from video games. This examination illustrates the tension between gaming as an immersive experience and the constraints imposed by utilitarian objectives. An important part of the analysis also focuses on economic and industrial issues, with a list of key players in the sector. The authors give the floor to over 60 professionals, including Serious Games developers, consultants and sponsors. These testimonials offer an insightful look at market dynamics, the challenges encountered in developing these games and the sector's future prospects. Finally, Alvarez and Djaouti examine the scope and limits of Serious Games: are they simply an evolution in video game use, or a real technological and pedagogical breakthrough? This central question runs through the whole book, inviting the reader to reflect on the wider implications of serious games in our societies. The book also offers an analysis of the field, combining historical, theoretical and applied perspectives. Far from limiting itself to a description of existing games, the book questions their relevance, effectiveness and limits, while offering a detailed overview of the market and the main players involved.
