Abstract
From a practical point of view regarding automotive applications, it is crucial to accurately predict the performance, state-of-health and remaining lifetime of lithium\textendash sulfur batteries (LSBs). For that purpose, it is necessary to develop diagnostic schemes that can evaluate the electrochemical cells performance and its state-of-health adequately.1 In order to achieve this, several steps are required: A better understanding of the several individual processes in the cell components; The understanding of the interplay between electrochemical/transport mechanisms and (thermo-) mechanical behaviors at multiple spatiotemporal scales with their possible competitions and synergies; The identification of the contribution of each mechanism into the global cell response under operating conditions; The design of controllers for the online control of the LSB cells behavior to enhance its durability under specific operation conditions (e.g. by controlling the dynamics of the cycling, the temperature, etc.). \textcopyright 2017 by World Scientific Publishing Europe Ltd.
